Abstract

Phonetic transcription plays an important role in language learning, particularly in improving pronunciation and phonological awareness among learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). English spelling is often inconsistent, which makes pronunciation difficult for learners. Phonetic transcription provides a systematic representation of speech sounds using symbols, most commonly through the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This article discusses how phonetic transcription helps learners understand sound–symbol relationships, improve pronunciation accuracy, and develop independent learning skills. The study highlights the pedagogical benefits of integrating phonetic transcription into language teaching. The findings suggest that regular practice with phonetic symbols can significantly improve learners’ pronunciation and overall communicative competence
