Abstract

The quality of university education in Nigeria is falling. The National Universities Commission is saddled with the responsibilities of supervising the universities. This article discusses the problems facing the supervision of universities in Nigeria. Secondary data was used to support the points raised in the article. The secondary data were sourced from print materials and online publications by recognized institutions, opinions and views of authorities in education. Inadequate funding, opposition from ASUU, shortage of professional supervisors, inadequate supervision materials, poor capacity development of supervisors, corruption, inadequate transportation facilities and insecurity were identified as the problems facing the supervision of  universities in Nigeria. To address these problems, the following were recommended: adequate funding of National Universities Commission, employment of more staff in the commission, provision of adequate transport facilities, constant training and retraining of staff of the commission etc.
