Abstract

The Nigerian child is one that is saddled with the responsibility of coping with a verse environment. The child needs to get acquainted with the environment. One of the ways of doing this is through effective reading of materials through which information is passed. The ability of a child to read has a great spill on the child’s intellect and social development. However, reading culture amongst children tends to have dwindled over the years. So much so that children seem not to enjoy reading and as such losses interest in relevant information carrying materials as it has to do with their social environment and general academics. This in turn has negative influence on their academic performance. Haven been compassed by this great problem, this paper therefore, brings to limelight the roles of teachers in revamping reading culture amongst pupils in public schools. It X-rayed the key roles of teachers in enhancing reading culture amongst pupils, factors that have impeded on the reading culture of pupils and relevant ways were suggested to improve reading culture amongst children.
