Abstrak

Public universities, being vibrant spaces with diverse populations, have become particularly vulnerable to these security threats. This necessitates the incorporation of sustainable development initiatives and the development of effective policing strategies within the public university system. The study aims at making a critical analysis of the crimes that occur in universities in south-south Nigeria with a view to effectively police the environment for effective teaching, learning and research to take place. The objective of this study amongst others is to determine the various methods of policing for sustainable development in Universities in South-South Geo-political zone of Nigeria. The study looked at the concept of policing, policing for sustainable development, challenges of policing in Nigeria, and methods of policing. Policing for sustainable development not only enhances the safety and security of public universities but also contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals within the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria. Through their actions, these institutions can serve as exemplars of sustainable practices, inspiring positive change in their communities and beyond. Hence, the study recommends amongst others that, public universities in south-south should establish a proactive policing strategy that addresses the unique security challenges faced by their campuses. This strategy should incorporate community-oriented policing principles, focusing on collaboration, engagement, and trust-building with the local community.
