Cry, the Peacock (1963), Anita Desai’s debut novel, presents an intense psychological exploration of the human mind, particularly focusing on the inner turmoil experienced by the protagonist, Maya. This paper explores how Desai uses the technique of psychodrama—depicting internal conflict through emotional intensity, vivid imagery, and complex character interactions—to delve into the psychological states of her characters. By analyzing Maya’s troubled inner world, Desai critiques the broader social structures that contribute to personal and existential crises. This paper argues that Desai’s portrayal of inner turmoil in Cry, the Peacock is a compelling exploration of the human psyche, and it positions the novel as a significant work in postcolonial and feminist literary contexts.
