This article analyzes the strategic and institutional aspects of increasing competitiveness and efficiency in the higher education system. The study examines trends in the global higher education system, factors determining the competitiveness of universities, management and financing mechanisms, and the role of institutional reforms. Also, based on the experience of developed countries, scientific and practical recommendations for improving the higher education system are developed.
