Abstract
The article is devoted to the definition of segmental paraphonetic means in non-linguistic communication. The author analyzes the work of leading scientists in this field and recognizes the segmental nature of paralinguistic means, including all contrasting sound effects, which naturally vary among themselves as segmental or lexical components of an utterance. The article reveals the paralinguistic character of those segmental units that are formed by special positions of the organs of speech and create a single perceptual impression and semantic interpretation. The author also considers the issue of onomatopoeia in the language system as special units of the morphological level, and their sounds, remaining at the phonetic and phonological levels, belong to a separate section of linguistics – paralinguistics.
