Abstract
Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) are very crucial in economic growth, creation of employment and sustainable development but they are challenged with the growing challenges of globalization, technological advancement and highly competitive businesses. In this regard, the development of an organizational culture of innovation has become one of the vital organizational resources in improving the SME performance. This research will focus on discussing how the culture of innovation can lead to better performance of SMEs and especially in the industrial sector. The study is a quantitative study that employed a structured questionnaire as its research method and employed a sample of 50 SME managers and employees. The culture of innovation is assessed in four dimensions which include the support of innovation by the leadership, promotion of creativity and individual drive, organizational learning and knowledge sharing, and organizational flexibility. Performance of the SMEs is measured on both financial, operational and market/ competitive basis. The analysis of data was performed with the help of SPSS in terms of descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. Its results indicate that leadership support of innovation positively affects the whole SME performance statistically significantly, which makes it the most powerful of the dimensions of the innovation culture. The other dimensions, which include encouragement of creativity, organizational learning and organizational flexibility did not exhibit statistically significant effects in the sampled, but descriptive outcomes indicate moderate innovation practices adoption. The regression model has the ability to explain 12.5% of the variance in the performance of the SMEs demonstrating that innovation culture works to increase the performance but not the only determinant. Measurement and sample-size limitations that are manifested through low reliability coefficients are also noted in the study. The findings highlight the key role of leadership in enhancing the culture of innovation and the performance of SMEs, and the necessity of improvement of the measurement instruments, the increased samples, and a combination of the culture of innovation with other drivers of strategy and management. The research is theoretically relevant to the literature on innovation and SME performance and has practical implications to the SME managers and policymakers in the developing economies.
