Abstract

This paper examines the causes of unemployment and it implications on national security in Dutse local government Jigawa state. The specific objectives set for the study were to examine the causes and implications of unemployment on national security. Relevant literature on the concept of unemployment and National security were reviewed. The study adopted a survey research design that involves the administration of questionnaire to 96 respondents However, out of this number, only 80 questionnaire were validity completed and returned. Thus, the analysis is based on the 80 questionnaires retrieved. The findings of the study revealed that; Rapid population growth and neglecting agricultural sector are the major causes of unemployment in Dutse local government; Increase in crime rate and jeopardizing the efforts of security agencies of crime prevention are the major implications of unemployment on national security. In view of the findings; Government should improve the agricultural sector in order to curtail the problem of unemployment in the country as well as improve food security; There is need to establish skills acquisition centers in the country in order to create adequate job opportunities in the country; Government should collaborate with Nongovernmental organizations like ILO and other international organizations to address the problem of unemployment in the country and finally; Entrepreneurship programs should be introduced at all level right from primary to tertiary level and strengthen in order build the culture of self-reliance among our youths.
