Abstract

Babur, the founder of the Great Baburid (Mughal) Empire, is renowned for his military genius, honed over years in the complex political landscape of Central Asia. Upon invading India, Babur encountered a completely new environment where he had to contend with entrenched local and regional warfare methods, such as those employed by the Rajputs and the Afghan nobility. In this article, the authors purposefully trace the evolution of Babur’s military strategies in response to the unique challenges of the Indian subcontinent. By masterfully combining the traditional principles of steppe warfare from Central Asia with emerging technologies—including gunpowder, firearms, and cannons—they explain how Babur elegantly integrated mounted archery and steppe tactics into this new system. Synthesizing his native military heritage with an understanding of India's martial traditions, Babur successfully established a new military order, reshaped the battlefield, and solidified Baburid dominance in India.
