Abstract
This paper examined the various contributions of universities to the development of Nigerian economic and also critically look at the various problems hindering the development of private universities in Nigeria. The paper is a review paper that depends on secondary data. The secondary data were collected from online and print publications. The paper concluded that the contributions of private universities to the Nigerian economy includes; increment in access to university education, employment generation, improvement in international rank of Nigerian universities, increment in manpower productions, provision of community services, enhancing economic growth and wellbeing of the immediate locality and research development. Inadequate funds, high electricity bills, shortage of infrastructure facilities, insecurity, shortage of staff and lack of adequate support from government as the problems hindering the development of private universities in Nigeria. Based on these points identified, the paper put forward the following measures; establishment of special loan facilities for private universities in Nigeria by the federal government. Government should provide conducive environment for the easy operation of the private universities in Nigeria by ensuring provision of adequate security in Nigeria.
