Abstract

Every language has its own nature, way of life, customs, culture, and art. Every nation stands out from others with its national uniqueness and its own culture. It is well known that the development of the category of modality plays a significant role in language. Despite numerous scientific studies, we can observe that the issue of defining the boundaries of the modality category and the means of its expression has not yet been fully resolved. Every grammatical category has grammatical possibilities in a sentence. Likewise, studying the grammatical possibilities of modal words and their position in a sentence is considered one of the most important factors. Failure to study the grammatical possibilities of modal words during the research leads to a lack of understanding of their usage methods and approaches. The lack of sufficient scientific foundations regarding the modality category and how it is expressed in languages serves as the basis for writing this article. The main purpose of this article is to explain the essence of the concept of “modality,” which is widespread as a lexico-grammatical category in linguistics but is contradictory; to analyze the views of local and foreign scholars on modality and its types; to examine the means of expressing this linguistic category in English and Uzbek languages; and to deeply analyze the diversity of the meanings and nuances of the means that express its content.
