Abstract
The article examines the peculiarities of the image of the tragic hero in Russian literature of the late 19th century. The works of F.M. Dostoevsky, L.N. Tolstoy and A.P. Chekhov are analyzed, the main themes and motives of tragedy are revealed. The influence of social, philosophical and spiritual factors of the epoch on the formation of tragic characters is investigated. It is shown that tragic heroes become symbols of their time, reflecting the deep contradictions of Russian society and the eternal questions of human existence. Special attention is paid to the role of the tragic hero in the development of Russian literature and its relevance to the modern reader.
