Abstract

The performance of long jumpers is determined not only by explosive power but also by the integration of coordination, speed, balance, and muscular strength. This study aims to compare the effects of three different training protocols—plyometric, isotonic, and isometric—on selected skill-related fitness components and performance outcomes of intercollegiate-level long jump athletes. Forty-five male athletes (age group 18–23 years) were purposively selected and divided into three groups: Plyometric Training Group (PTG), Isotonic Training Group (ITG), and Isometric Training Group (ISG). The intervention lasted for 12 weeks, with three training sessions per week. Pre- and post-test data were collected on speed, agility, coordination, power, balance, and actual long jump performance. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA. Results indicated that while all three training protocols improved performance parameters significantly (p<0.05), plyometric training produced the highest gains in explosive leg power and jump distance, followed by isotonic and isometric training respectively. The study underscores the importance of dynamic, sport-specific training modalities for optimal performance enhancement. These findings provide valuable insights for coaches, physical educators, and sports scientists to structure periodized training programs for collegiate long jumpers in India. It also emphasizes the role of scientific conditioning in talent development at the grassroots level.
