Abstract
This study critically evaluates the effectiveness of AI-powered automated writing evaluation (AWE) tools for English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The rapid advancements in AI have led to the development of these tools, which have gained significant attention in language learning due to their potential to provide personalized feedback, enhance writing skills, and streamline the assessment process. However, concerns remain about the reliability and validity of the feedback provided, as well as the ethical considerations surrounding the integration of these tools into the writing instruction process. This paper presents a comprehensive review of 10 prominent AI writing assistants to assess their suitability and effectiveness for ESL/EFL learners.
