Abstract
This paper explored paperless university education systems in Nigeria: Necessity, Benefits, and Challenges. The paper is a review paper that depend secondary data. The secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The study concluded that the adoption of paperless university education systems has become a pressing necessity for Nigerian tertiary institutions seeking to improve efficiency, enhance academic quality, and align with global best practices. Also, paperless university education systems in Nigeria will improve administrative efficiency, enhance teaching and learning outcomes, promote environmental sustainability, reduce operational costs, and prepare students for participation in a digital knowledge economy. Based on the findings, this paper recommends the Federal, state, and institutional authorities should prioritize funding for reliable computers, servers, high-speed internet, cloud storage, and sustainable power solutions such as solar energy. Special attention should be given to rural and underfunded universities to ensure equitable access and prevent digital inequality. Universities should implement continuous professional development programs to enhance the digital literacy and e-learning competencies of lecturers, administrative staff, and students. Training should focus on using learning management systems, electronic record management tools, online assessment platforms, and cybersecurity practices. The Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), and other regulatory bodies should develop standardized policies and guidelines for the adoption of paperless systems. Policies should address data security, ethical use of technology, digital content standards, and system interoperability to ensure uniformity and accountability across institutions.
