Abstract
Proverbs are integral part of our language and cultural identity. By learning and understanding the usage and meaning of them, we can gain valuable insight and history of different nations, and messages and themes presented by an author. But do you know where actually do proverbs come from? The word “proverb” comes from the Latin “proverbium”, meaning “a common saying, everyday word”. It literally makes the phrase, “words put forward”. Proverbs may vary in structure, languages, but they all reflect the same thing, same meaning and all show the value and history of cultures. They are also seen as short, well-known phrases or statements that convey general truths, advice, or wisdom about our life. In this article, we will explore the differences, similarities and originality of proverbs in English and Spanish.
