Abstract

The present article explores the clinical and immunological characteristics of gonarthrosis (knee osteoarthritis) in elderly patients. Gonarthrosis is one of the most prevalent degenerative joint diseases among the aging population, significantly impacting mobility, quality of life, and healthcare systems. The introduction emphasizes the epidemiological burden of the disease and discusses recent findings that highlight the involvement of immune-inflammatory mechanisms—particularly the role of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10—in the pathogenesis and progression of knee osteoarthritis. The study underscores how age-related changes in the immune system (immunosenescence) may influence disease severity and clinical outcomes. Understanding the interplay between immune markers and clinical presentation is essential for improving diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic approaches in elderly patients with gonarthrosis.
