Abstract
Protected natural areas play a key role in preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance under increasing anthropogenic pressure. This study focuses on the current condition of protected natural areas in the Republic of Uzbekistan, with particular emphasis on the Nurata Mountain–Walnut Forest State Reserve. The research aims to analyze ecological and biological characteristics of 35 protected mammal species, assess their population dynamics and habitats, and identify major threats to their survival. In addition, the study examines the legal and institutional framework regulating protected areas and highlights existing challenges in their management and conservation. The results demonstrate that despite significant legislative progress, gaps remain in monitoring systems, cadastral documentation, and enforcement mechanisms. Strengthening environmental education, scientific research, and integrated management approaches is essential for ensuring long-term conservation and sustainable development.
