Abstract

This study examined the promotion of green investment in public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. The study specifically investigated the extent of green investment practices in public secondary schools and identified strategies for promoting green investment in schools. The increasing concern for environmental sustainability, climate change, and energy conservation has made green investment an important aspect of educational development in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised teachers and school administrators in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja. A sample size of 185 respondents was selected using simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire titled Green Investment Promotion Questionnaire (GIPQ) was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using mean scores and descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that the level of green investment in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja remains low due to inadequate funding, weak policy implementation, lack of environmental awareness, poor infrastructural development, and insufficient government support. The study also found that increased government funding, partnerships with private organizations, environmental education, provision of renewable energy facilities, and establishment of green school programmes could improve green investment in schools. The study concluded that effective promotion of green investment in schools would improve environmental sustainability, enhance learning conditions, reduce energy costs, and promote eco-friendly practices among students and staff. The study recommended stronger government commitment toward green infrastructure development and environmental sustainability in public secondary schools.
