Abstract

The increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria has intensified the need for effective capacity building and professional development among security personnel. Contemporary security challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, kidnapping, armed banditry, insurgency, and transnational organized crimes require highly trained, technologically skilled, and professionally competent security personnel capable of responding effectively to emerging threats. This paper examined the importance of capacity building and professional development for security personnel in Nigeria and discussed major challenges militating against effective training programmes within the security sector. The study revealed that capacity building enhances operational efficiency, intelligence gathering, professionalism, crisis response, technological competence, and public confidence in security agencies. However, inadequate funding, obsolete training facilities, corruption, shortage of qualified instructors, and political interference were identified as major obstacles affecting effective professional development in Nigeria’s security institutions. The paper concluded that sustainable national security depends significantly on the competence, professionalism, and continuous training of security personnel. The study therefore recommended increased government investment in training infrastructure, modernization of security institutions, regular retraining programmes, improved welfare packages, and stronger institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the professional capacity of security personnel in Nigeria.
