Abstract

Literature review is an essential component of academic research because it enables researchers to examine, synthesize and critically evaluate existing knowledge relating to a research problem. Different types of literature reviews serve different scholarly purposes and vary in scope, methodology and approach to evidence synthesis. This paper examines the major types of literature review, including narrative, systematic, scoping, integrative, critical, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, theoretical, conceptual, historical and rapid literature reviews. The paper explains the distinctive features, applications, strengths and limitations of each type. Narrative reviews provide broad discussions of existing scholarship, while systematic reviews use explicit and structured procedures to identify and synthesize evidence. Scoping reviews map the extent of literature on broad or emerging topics, whereas integrative reviews combine different forms of evidence. Critical reviews evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of previous studies, while meta-analysis and meta-synthesis synthesize quantitative and qualitative findings respectively. The paper concludes that the selection of a literature-review type should be guided by the research question, purpose, discipline, available evidence and methodological requirements. It recommends that researchers should develop adequate literature-search skills, select review approaches systematically and critically evaluate sources before drawing conclusions.
