Abstrak

It is common knowledge that where there is no peace, there cannot be progress, growth or development. This applies to the development of quality university education in Nigeria. Insecurity in Nigeria has contributed greatly to the decline of universities as staff and students cannot perform academic activities successfully due to disruption caused by agents of insecurity. It has been noted that one of the factors considered before students make their choice of universities is the level of security surrounding the university. It is against this background that this paper discusses insecurity in Nigeria and how actions of criminal elements have hindered the progress of a quality university education. Relevant literature review from authors which identify how insecurity has affected quality university education in Nigeria were examined in this paper. The problems facing university administrators in their efforts to foster peace within the university community were examined in this paper to include lack of state-of-the-art security facilities, poor training of security agents and members of the university community, lack of funds, amongst others. It was concluded in this paper that peace within university communities in Nigeria would foster the achievement of quality university education which would in time lead to sustainable development. Ways forward from the problems discussed in this paper were also provided to include provision of funds, provision of adequate security personnel, and facilities for security, as well as proper training of security agents, staff and students of universities on how to properly act in a state of insecurity.
