Abstract
This paper explores strategies for advancing green school initiatives within Nigerian educational institutions. It concludes that key strategies for developing green school programs include formulating a national policy on green schools, ensuring its adaptation by state governments, allocating special funds for implementation, and establishing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Essential components of the green school framework involve creating school policies focused on green curricula, green classrooms, eco-friendly facilities, school gardens, clean energy, waste management, digitalization of teaching and learning, recycling, and reducing paper usage. Based on these findings, the paper recommends that the federal government expedite the work of the committee on green school projects through the Ministry of Education and Environment, and establish national policies to support green school initiatives. Additionally, state and local governments should develop action plans for green school programs. The involvement of international organizations, private institutions, and non-governmental organizations is also crucial in planning and implementing green school initiatives across Nigerian schools.
