Abstract
The main idea of this article is The Physician is a historical novel by Noah Gordon that tells the story of Rob Cole, a young Christian boy who is orphaned in 11th-century England. After his parents die, Rob is taken in by a barber-surgeon, and he becomes very interested in medicine. Wanting to learn more, Rob decides to travel to Persia to study with the famous physician Ibn Sina (Avicenna). To get into the Muslim medical school in Isfahan, Rob pretends to be a Jew and changes his name to Jesse ben Benjamin. While studying in the East, Rob learns advanced medical skills and also discovers the importance of compassion, ethics, and learning from different cultures. He returns to England as a skilled healer, bringing back new knowledge and a deeper understanding of medicine from his journey. In The Physician, Rob Cole’s encounters with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures greatly change his understanding of medicine. The novel, set in the medieval period, follows Rob’s journey from England to the East, where he hopes to learn more about advanced medical practices. At the medical school in Isfahan, Rob finds a place where different cultural traditions and knowledge come together. By learning from people of different religions, like Christians, Jews, and Muslims, Rob gains a better understanding of medicine that goes beyond cultural and religious differences. These experiences not only expand his medical skills but also teach him the importance of precision, honesty, and ethics in healthcare.
