Abstract

The advent of social media has instigated one of the most rapid and significant linguistic shifts in the history of the English language. This paper examines the multifaceted influence of platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok on Modern English, focusing on lexical innovation, grammatical simplification, and socio-pragmatic changes. It argues that social media acts as a potent catalyst for language evolution, democratizing linguistic creativity while simultaneously raising concerns about the erosion of standard forms. The analysis synthesizes existing scholarly work to demonstrate that the influence is not monolithic but varies across platforms, user demographics, and communicative contexts. While social media fosters a dynamic and inclusive linguistic environment, its long-term impact on literacy and formal communication standards remains a subject of ongoing debate. The study concludes that the changes observed are a natural, user-driven adaptation to new digital mediums of interaction.
